Students should prepare a solo, 1-2 minutes in length. This should not be a part from an orchestra piece.

Students must have completed (and are continuing) at least one year of private instruction on their instrument.

Students should be able to perform music with rhythms including eighth, quarter, half, and whole notes, as well as correlating rests, in the keys of D and G Major, on the A, D, and G strings, in first position. Intermezzo Strings

Students should prepare a solo, 2-3 minutes in length. This should not be a part from an orchestra piece.

Students are usually recommended to participate in Intermezzo after one or two years’ participation in Prelude, upon recommendation by the Conductor.

Students in Intermezzo participate in either Prelude or Intermediate for the first two hours of rehearsal, then participate in Intermezzo for the third hour of rehearsal, upon determination of the Conductors. Students in Prelude who are not selected to participate in Intermezzo only rehearse for the first two hours in Prelude.

New students who wish to participate in Intermezzo should be familiar with the audition requirements for Prelude (listed above), with the following additions:

Able to perform music with rhythms including sixteenth notes, syncopation, and more complex moving lines and rest patterns, able to perform on all four strings, and also able to perform in the key of C.

  • Cellos should be comfortable shifting into second and fourth positions on the D and A strings.

  • Basses should be comfortable shifting into second position on the G string to complete the C Major scale.

  • Violin students interested in playing 1st Violin should also perform 2-octave D Major scale, utilizing third position.
